Negative Effects of Same-Sex Marriage Introduction In the past 50 years, the American family has undergone immense changes. In the past, families remained extremely conservative and traditional families, upholding the ideal of marriage, which remained between a man and a woman. Recently, with the passing of Obergefell v. Hodges, same-sex marriage is now legal in the United States. Consequently, the idea of marriage has been redefined, and, as a result, the new legislature will now have significant effects on the future of marriage and family. Some of these effects will occur immediately and, on the other hand, some of the effects will not take place for several years. The immediate effects include, schools will now advocate same-sex marriage and religious liberty will be threatened. Long-term effects include less faithful monogamous marriages, fewer children raised by a mother and father, lower birth rates, and the possibility of polygamy. Short-Term Effects After the legalization of same-sex marriage, schools throughout the United States will now teach and advocate for same-sex marriage. After same-sex marriage passed in Massachusetts in 2004, schools began promoting a homosexual-friendly classroom. For instance, in Brookline, Mass. Debra Allen, a teacher, used graphs and charts to show how to perform homosexual acts.
